The Bali authorities are stepping up inspections of motorcycle taxi drivers following numerous complaints from tourists and locals about illegal operators actively working in Legian, Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu.

According to the police, some drivers 'manipulate their status': they sometimes take orders through official services like GoJek and Grab, and at other times accept clients directly, bypassing the apps when it seems more profitable. These drivers often push for rides, handle orders outside the booking system, and get into conflicts with each other over passengers.
On October 18, the police in Kuta, together with the civil police and representatives of the traditional village of Legian, conducted a raid in one of the busiest areas in the south of Bali. They checked driver's licenses, vehicle documents, and application data. In one day, 20 illegal drivers were detained; they wore jackets with online service logos but were not registered with any of them. The offenders had their uniforms confiscated, which can only be returned upon confirmation of registration in the official apps.
The head of the village of Legian, Putu Eka Martini, noted that this situation causes dissatisfaction among residents and may negatively impact the resort's image.
During the inspections, other violations were also identified, such as missing mirrors, documents, and license plates. For now, warnings are issued, but fines and administrative measures might be imposed in the future.
The head of the Badung traffic police, ACP Ni Luh Tivyasi, emphasized that raids and educational programs will continue: 'We are reinforcing prevention and driver's education, especially in tourist areas. Any cases of pressure or aggression towards tourists will be dealt with according to the law'.
Nevertheless, incidents are not stopping: last week, the police once again visited Legian following complaints about a fight between drivers and the theft of a foreign tourist's wallet.
The police recommend that tourists: – use only official apps like GoJek and Grab; – inform their relatives about the vehicle number; – do not agree to rides outside the app with an unfamiliar driver.
