If you’re traveling around Bali by bike or car, we recommend staying extra vigilant for the next two weeks (though it’s always a good idea). Indonesia’s national police have launched the “Zebra-2024” operation ahead of the presidential inauguration. The operation began on October 14 and will run for two weeks across the entire country, including Bali. A total of 1,025 police officers will be involved in the raids, aiming to encourage drivers to follow traffic rules.
The main goal is not only to minimize traffic accidents ahead of the inauguration of the newly elected president, Sukarno, but also to improve overall driving culture, especially in rural areas.

Before the start of “Zebra-2024”, police units nationwide participated in formations to prepare for the operation. In the tourist city of Bandung, the operation is overseen by Police Chief Teguh Priyo Wasono.
“In this operation, 109 officers from the Badung police will be deployed, with a focus on education and persuasion. The raids will be both mobile and stationary,” he explained.
It has also been revealed which specific violations the police will be paying special attention to. There are 14 in total, which authorities believe lead to traffic jams and accidents:
1. Driving on the wrong side of the road.
2. Unauthorized use of sirens and flashing lights.
3. Children riding motorcycles.
4. Using fake or expired registration numbers.
5. Drunk driving.
6. Using a phone while driving.
7. Not wearing a seatbelt (for cars).
8. Speeding.
9. Riding a motorcycle with three or more passengers.
10. Driving four-wheeled vehicles not designed for public roads.
11. Driving four-wheeled vehicles that are not equipped with standard equipment.
12. Driving two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles without vehicle registration certificates (STNK).
13. Crossing solid lines or driving on the shoulder.
14. Misusing diplomatic license plates (TNKB).

The focus will also be on proactive and preventive actions, such as educating drivers on the importance of traffic safety. However, fines may still be issued at the discretion of police officers. Penalties for violations during “Zebra-2024” range from IDR 250,000 to IDR 1,000,000, depending on the specific articles of the traffic and transportation law.
