The Nusa Penida traffic police unit recently conducted raids targeting traffic violators, especially focusing on those riding bikes without helmets. The operation took place in the area of the Biaung three-way intersection. These raids will be conducted regularly to raise public awareness about the importance of following traffic rules for overall safety.
During the raids, police also seized 30 vehicles, including 28 cars and two motorcycles, which had fake vehicle registration certificates (STNK). One of these vehicles has already been handed over to the Buleleng police department in connection with a fraud investigation.
Traffic accident statistics in Nusa Penida show an increase in road incidents, prompting stricter safety measures. In 2023, local authorities recorded a significant number of accidents, particularly involving tourists on motorcycles and scooters.
For instance, a recent high-profile incident involved two Polish tourists, D.P. (26) and his girlfriend A.B. (26), on January 22, 2024. They were crossing Tulad Road in the village of Batu Kandik and fell into a 9-meter-deep ravine. The girl died from severe head trauma, while the young man sustained serious injuries.
The Nusa Penida police have urged all motorcycle rental businesses in Bali to rent vehicles only to tourists who have driving skills or, at the very least, a valid driver's license.
The roads in Nusa Penida are quite dangerous, with steep turns and high ravines. If you are not confident in your driving skills, it is recommended to explore the island's beauty by traveling in a car with a local driver.
