Klungkung district has allocated 1.5 billion rupiah in the 2025 budget for the major repair of the only road from the village of Sakti to Crystal Bay Beach—a tourist magnet on Nusa Penida that receives hundreds of visitors daily.

After recent heavy rains, which caused another landslide that washed away nearly half of the road surface and led the police to cordon off the route, it became clear: patches would not solve the problem. The project, already out for tender, includes reinforcing three of the most dangerous sections of the slope with retaining embankments measuring 25, 15.5, and 45 meters in length with heights of 3.5, 3, and 2.5 meters respectively. Simultaneously, the contractor will lay drainage pipes to direct water down channels, preventing erosion at the road base, and will lay new asphalt.
The work is scheduled for the dry season so that by the end of the year traffic will be restored without the need for reversible traffic lights and detours. The next step planned by the authorities is to widen the road to 12 meters so that large buses can pass without dangerous maneuvers. However, this will require negotiation with the Ministry of Forestry to approve the felling of several trees since part of the route borders a protected forest.
Officials expect that the reliable road will alleviate the traffic bottleneck and restore a stable flow of tourists, on which the incomes of boat owners, accommodation renters, and coastal cafes depend.
