Nusa Penida is experiencing a transport crisis. Each morning and evening, roads around Banjar Nyuh harbor are blocked by cars, buses, and scooters. Most tourists arrive and leave at the same hours, and the island simply cannot cope with the load.

"We have mapped the bottlenecks. Traffic jams are repeated every day, especially on the routes from the pier to the main attractions," said Gusti Gede Gunarta, head of the Klungkung transport agency.
The problem is exacerbated by the lack of parking spaces. Some drivers leave their vehicles right at the port entrance, obstructing traffic. A raid was conducted on August 25: police and port services removed cars parked in violation. But even official signs and designated parking areas do not deter violators.
Authorities plan to:
– optimize the work of traffic controllers during peak hours
– widen and repair roads
– install gates and physical barriers at problem spots.

The situation with license plates is discussed separately: many cars are registered outside Bali, and taxes from them do not go into the local budget. "This needs to be reviewed. Revenues should return here," insists Gunarta.
While solutions remain in the preparation stage, tourists are advised to choose boats outside peak hours, allow extra time, and, if possible, stay on the island for at least one or two nights.
