Halfway is the main peak in Kuta, the most consistent beach break on the whole stretch of coast. It's right in front of Poppies Lane 2 — look for the Surf Discovery surf school and the Kuta Beach sign. On a beach break the peaks move around, but Halfway holds its position — which is why it has its own name. The wave here is better quality and more consistent than the neighbouring stretches of beach. Local surfers ride here all the time, putting on a show at sunset.
The wave & conditions
A beach break with shifting sandbanks. The right is usually longer and better shaped. The waves are more powerful and consistent than the rest of Kuta — local contests are held here regularly. At mid to high tide the wave is soft and even, suitable for all levels. At low tide on a good swell hollow, barrelling sections appear — that's expert territory, and beginners struggle at that speed. Kuta generally handles big waves poorly — on a strong swell Halfway only works properly on a shortboard. On sets from 12 ft most of the waves are closeouts, but the odd rideable wedge comes through.
Conditions & tips
The main problem is the crowd. Halfway is very popular — at peak times there can be 50–100 people. Local surfers dominate the peak and drop in freely. There's an agreement with the locals not to bring surf schools here. If people are dropping in on you, it's better to move away from the main peak — there's plenty of room along Kuta. Watch out for flying boards. Come early — the onshore usually picks up by midday. In the evening the wind often drops, giving a second clean session at sunset. In the wet season there can be rubbish in the water. Parking and board rental are right on the beach.
There's a Surfline webcam at Halfway — you can check conditions before heading out.
