Kuta is Bali's most famous and busiest surf spot, stretching 2 km along the beach. It's a beach break with a sandy bottom — one of the few places on the island without a reef. Plenty of peaks with lefts and rights appear and disappear as the sand shifts. On a small swell Kuta is the perfect place to learn: soft waves, a safe bottom, dozens of surf schools. But on a good swell there are excellent waves here that can barrel — especially at the Halfway peak.

The wave & conditions

The character of the wave depends on the tide. At mid tide, on the incoming, you get long rideable walls, good for learning. At low tide on a good swell barrelling sections appear, but the wave often closes out. At full tide the waves mostly break right on the shore — for first lessons, mid or rising water is better.
The best-known and most reliable peak is Halfway, roughly in the middle of the beach, in front of SurfDiscovery. It's more often a right that breaks longer than the others thanks to a favourable sandbank formation. On a big swell the left works too. On a good swell and low tide Halfway can deliver hollow sections with short barrels. North of Halfway, in front of the Pullman hotel, there's another reliable, less crowded peak. Further north still, around Padma, the wave is more powerful and harder — a zone for confident surfers.

Conditions & tips

Almost every surf school on Bali runs its first lessons right here in Kuta — there's always whitewater for beginners. Because of that the lineup is always crowded, especially with students and weaker surfers. Be careful not to clip anyone with your board. There's board rental on the beach — from 50,000 IDR per session, rentals all along the sand. As the swell builds, strong rips form — keep track of your position using landmarks on shore. In the wet season (October–March) the onshore winds blow, rubbish washes onto the beach, and the surfing conditions get much worse. When Kuta is blown out or dirty (November–March), the surf schools take students to Nusa Dua or Serangan — it's offshore and cleaner there at that time of year.
Hazards: rips on a big swell, crowds of surfers and swimmers
Max swell: 6–8 ft
