Getting a visa extension in Bali will become easier: the Indonesian immigration service is testing a new format - Immigration Lounge in shopping malls. The first trial days took place on December 6-7 at Discovery Mall in Kuta; the pilot project was deemed successful.
According to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, the mobile unit serviced 384 people in two days, although the capacity was designed for a thousand visitors. The test lounge offered only the most in-demand services — extensions of tourist stay permits (visas on arrival) and issuing/extending passports for Indonesian citizens.
According to the head of the Ngurah Rai immigration office, Winarko, offering services in public spaces is a step towards making them "faster, more accessible, and closer to people who move around a lot." Bali remains the country's main international hub, and quick access to visa procedures is becoming critically important for both tourists and locals.
A permanent unit will definitely open in one of the central malls in 2026 - the specific location is still being decided. The new format will complement the existing hybrid visa extension system: tourists apply online, then visit an office for biometrics and document verification. Currently, such visits typically take place in branches in Denpasar or Nusa Dua.
To reduce the burden on these offices, two new immigration branches were opened in November in Tabanan and Klungkung. They are categorized as Class III and provide a limited range of services, but significantly ease life for those living in Canggu, Bedugul, and Candidasa.
