Indonesia Launches Its First Smart Microgrid on Nusa Penida

The state-owned company PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara) has launched the region's first Smart Microgrid on Nusa Penida — a microgrid that integrates solar installations, battery systems, and backup diesel generators, all managed by algorithms.

The system balances the load in real-time: prioritizing solar generation; excess energy is stored for nighttime use; if power is insufficient, diesel generators are automatically activated. The 'brain' of the network is located on Penida, and it supplies all three islands of the Nusa group — Penida, Lembongan, and Ceningan.
Previously, the islands were entirely dependent on diesel generation. Now, there is stable electricity supply even during peak times and cloudy weather, with reduced CO₂ emissions and lower operational energy costs. For local businesses — hotels, cafés, dive centers, and eco-villas — this means fewer disruptions and predictable bills.
The project aligns with PLN's 2.0 strategy for digitalization and increasing the share of renewable energy in remote areas. The plan is to expand solar generation and scale the model to other regions of Indonesia.
