Bali Governor Wayan Koster announced the launch of several major energy projects that will allow the island to transition to self-generation. In 2026, the construction of a gas power plant will begin in Pesanggaran (Denpasar), and in 2027, a similar facility with a capacity of 450 MW will be commissioned in Gianyar. Another two 450 MW units will appear in Celukan-Bawang (Buleleng).

“Electricity for Bali must be produced on the island itself. We do not intend to increase power imports,” the governor emphasized. Currently, underwater cables from the Paiton station in East Java provide around 350 MW, so any disruptions on the line are immediately felt in Bali.
According to the plan by state supplier PLN, the new facilities will add 1.5 GW to the system between 2026 and 2029. Authorities are also urging residents to install solar panels and expand the use of renewable energy sources.
Two months ago, a major blackout paralyzed business and transport on the island and led to significant losses. The government's new policy is designed to ensure such situations do not occur again, moving Bali towards true energy independence.
