Power Outages Roll On Across Bali

After the massive blackout on May 2, caused by damage to the underwater cable between Java and Bali, the island continues to experience power supply disruptions. According to PT PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara — the national electricity company), the damaged cable is a key component of the power system, and its failure has caused malfunctions at all power plants in the region.

On May 5, the company conducted several planned power outages on the island. Electricity temporarily went out in several areas, including Denpasar, Pecatu, Ubud, Karangasem, and Klungkung. This was due to maintenance following the blackout, as well as measures to stabilize the power system.
The official schedule for outages on May 6 has not yet been published. However, PLN officials warn that power supply disruptions may continue and be temporary and irregular. Efforts to stabilize the system are ongoing, and full restoration may take several days.
Residents are advised to charge their devices in advance, prepare alternative light sources, and follow updates in the PLN Mobile app or on the official PLN UID Bali Instagram page.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of developing alternative energy sources on the island itself. In particular, the ministry recommends considering building a geothermal power plant (PLTP) in Bali to reduce dependence on centralized energy supplies from Java.
ESDM spokesperson I Gusti Agung Rai Suryawijaya noted that the incident was a "signal" that Bali needs a more sustainable, autonomous energy infrastructure, especially given the island's tourist and economic significance.
