One Hour of Darkness: Bali Airport Faces Major Power Disruption

On Friday evening, a sudden power outage occurred at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali. The terminals and surrounding area were plunged into darkness, causing flight delays, traffic jams, and temporary disruptions to airport systems.

According to airport management, the failure occurred around 6:13 PM local time. As a result, some systems, including automatic gates, ticket offices, and check-in counters, stopped working. The check-in process for passengers had to be carried out manually for a while.
Videos from the airport published online showed complete darkness in the waiting areas, with passengers using their phone flashlights. Long lines of cars also formed at the airport entrances and exits due to non-operational automatic barriers.

The airport's general manager, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, confirmed the incident and apologized to passengers for the inconvenience. "We apologize to all airport users for the difficulties encountered. Staff were deployed for manual control of passenger and vehicle flow," he stated.

Power supply was restored around 7:18 PM, a little over an hour after the outage.
Later, the PLN company (the Indonesian state electricity operator) released a statement explaining that the cause was a load drop on two supply lines feeding electricity to the international terminal.
PLN emphasized that the airport is a strategic facility for Bali, so control and backup of power lines will be reinforced to prevent similar situations in the future.
A similar blackout occurred at the airport on August 14, 2025, when malfunctions at a transformer substation near the airport caused power supply disruptions.
Currently, as PLN and airport management reported, all systems are operating normally, power supply is stable, and flights are running on schedule.
