Rainy Season 2024/25 in Indonesia: What to Expect

The rainy season has already begun in central areas of Bali, with the region currently experiencing the effects of a weak La Niña phenomenon. This phenomenon may lead to increased rainfall compared to normal conditions, though its impact remains mild so far. According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the entire Bali region will enter the rainy season by December 2024, with its peak expected in late January to February 2025.

BMKG has also warned of potential extreme weather conditions during the rainy season in Bali. Residents are advised to stay alert for heavy rains, strong winds, and associated risks such as flooding or falling trees.
BMKG’s forecast indicates that the peak of the 2024-25 rainy season in other regions of Indonesia, including Sumatra, the southern coast of Java, and Kalimantan, will occur between November 2024 and February 2025. Areas where the peak rainy season will occur in January-February 2025 include Lampung, northern Java, parts of Sulawesi, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and much of Papua.
The agency also reported the development of two tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean: Tropical Cyclone 96S southwest of Bengkulu and Tropical Cyclone 99B west of Aceh. These cyclones may have direct or indirect impacts on the weather and water conditions in western Indonesia.
Additionally, several atmospheric phenomena, such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation (a fluctuation in equatorial atmospheric patterns), Rossby waves (air waves in mid-latitudes), and Kelvin waves, are active. These phenomena could increase the likelihood of extreme weather events in the coming weeks, such as torrential rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
BMKG urges the public to remain vigilant and consider weather forecasts when planning travel. Emergency services are preparing to mitigate the effects in vulnerable tourist areas.
The tourism authorities of Labuan Bajo and Flores (BPOLBF) recommend that both locals and tourists pay close attention to weather conditions during the Christmas and New Year holidays in 2024/2025.
