A heightened sense of justice, present in some locals, almost led to a fatal incident. Muzamil Fadli, a 42-year-old Indonesian man, was severely beaten by a mob that took the law into their own hands. The incident occurred at a Mandiri ATM in Seminyak.
A foreign tourist was withdrawing money but accidentally left his card in the ATM. Fadli, noticing the oversight, seized the opportunity to steal someone else's money. He entered the ATM booth and withdrew two million rupiah from the account.
At that moment, the tourist returned for his card and caught Fadli red-handed.
The foreigner loudly declared he had caught a thief, attracting a crowd of onlookers. After retrieving his card and money, the tourist left.
However, the locals did not wait for the police. They decided to take matters into their own hands and subjected Fadli to a rather brutal beating. He sustained severe injuries to his body and head.
Doctors later reported that he had suffered a skull fracture and required surgery.
Currently, Kuta police are still trying to locate the foreigner who was involved in the incident. Authorities are urging him to file a report at the station for further legal proceedings. However, it is unlikely he will do so, as the tourist did not suffer any material loss from the incident.
Such cases of mob justice are not uncommon in Bali. Previously, there were reports of locals beating a foreigner with sticks after he attempted to steal a car. A similar fate befell tourists who got into a fight with security guards at the Atlas beach club.
It's advised never to get into conflicts with local residents, even if you believe you're in the right. Otherwise, you may never see justice.
