Kind Waves: Surf Fest Backs Coral Reef Restoration Efforts

Pererenan hosts Surf Fest — the main sporting event of the charity week Bali Ocean Week. At sunrise on June 6, surfers of all ages gathered at River Mouth near Echo Beach: the schedule features hits from categories like Open, Women, Groms, and the Aerial discipline. The Asian Surf Cooperative manages the judging and technical aspects; Liveheats immediately posts the results online.

The starting lists feature riders from the Pererenan, Canggu, Padma, and Kedungu clubs; the largest group is the juniors. Heats are conducted under WSL rules: five judges score each wave on a ten-point scale, the best two attempts are counted, and in Aerial, additional attention is paid to height and landing quality.
Winners receive not only cash prizes and gifts from sponsors but also top-ranking points from Liga Surfing Indonesia, which are crucial for qualifying in international events of the Asian Surf Cooperative.
The festival combines sports with environmentalism. Participants donate to a reef restoration fund; guests are invited to join clean-up events and workshops on plastic recycling, held simultaneously on Bali's beaches.
Surf Fest will conclude with an awards ceremony at sunset, but Bali Ocean Week continues until June 8: including joint beach clean-ups, upcycle brand markets, and an open-air film screening at La Brisa. Entry is free, parking at River Mouth is limited, so organizers recommend coming by bike or walking from Pererenan's main street.
If the debut goes well, Pererenan could solidify its place in the international events calendar and draw more attention to Bali's environmental issues.
