A team of young Indonesian marine biologists from Ocean Gardener has discovered what is believed to be the world’s largest coral reef colony. Researchers found it near the northern coast of the island of Nusa Penida.
The reef has been named Galaxea astreata, which translates to “giant galaxy.” According to Ocean Gardener’s research and science coordinator, Manik Mayang, the colony measures 58 meters in width, 71 meters in length, and 10 meters in height, covering an area of over 4,000 square meters. Astonishingly, hundreds of divers who passed through the reef daily were unaware of its existence.
“This discovery could set a new world record. However, further tests are required to confirm its status among the world’s giant coral colonies,” Manik Mayang explained. He also emphasized that this discovery marks a significant milestone in marine conservation and coral biology research.
Preliminary measurements suggest that Galaxea astreata could surpass the current record-holder, a Pavona coral colony in the Solomon Islands. That reef, discovered as recently as November 2024, measures 34 meters in width, 32 meters in length, and 5.5 meters in height.
The location of the newly discovered Indonesian giant is particularly favorable for coral growth. Nusa Penida is a vital site at the heart of the Indo-Pacific coral reef map. The Ocean Gardener team hopes that Galaxea astreata will become a focal point for conservation in the region, alongside the island’s populations of manta rays and mola-mola fish, also known as sunfish or moonfish.
The existence of massive coral reefs like Galaxea astreata not only enhances the region’s ecological value but also boosts its appeal to travelers. Snorkeling and diving on Nusa Penida draw tourists as much as the island’s postcard-perfect beaches.
Ocean Gardener, a Bali-based NGO focused on coral reef study and restoration, succeeded in this discovery after its young scientists participated in the Map the Giants program at Italy’s Bicocca University in Milan.
