The head of Bali's Department of Transportation, I Gusti Samsi Gunarta, explained the choice of this route due to its high traffic load and the availability of infrastructure for charging electric buses.
The experiment aims to test the performance of electric buses in real island conditions, assess energy consumption, passenger convenience, and the readiness of infrastructure (including charging stations). During the test period, which will last about a month, all rides will be free. One bus with a capacity of 25–30 people, provided by the private company PT Kalista, operates on the route.
By 2028, the Trans Metro Dewata fleet plans a full transition to electric buses as the current buses reach the end of their service life. Starting in 2026, the island will begin the phased introduction of electric taxis supported by funding from the Bali Development Fund.
The government's plan to switch to eco-friendly transport aims to reduce air pollution and make traveling in Bali's tourist areas more comfortable.
