Mushroom Rock is a fast right in the Nusa Dua area, one of the most powerful waves on this stretch of reef. On a good swell it barrels straight off the take-off and on down the line. The spot is dangerous — people often get scraped on the reef and break boards. It's a place for surfers who are confident on fast rights. It picks up less swell on average than Geger and the neighbouring spots.

The wave & conditions

The right is fast and powerful. On a medium swell it's a great wall for turns. Mushroom is first and foremost a barrel spot. With an offshore wind it barrels even at medium size. On a big swell the barrels are steep, the speed is high and mistakes cost dearly. The reef is very shallow. At a tide of 1.6 m you can touch the bottom with your hands on a duck dive. On the outgoing tide there's ankle-deep water and the reef is exposed. Your leash can snag on the coral — check it before your session. With the right wind Mushroom Rock is cleaner and more hollow than neighbouring Black Stone. The rocky headland shelters the lineup from southwesterly winds — if Black Stone or Mengiat are choppy, Mushroom often stays clean.

Conditions & tips

It works from mid to high tide, comfortable from 1.5 m of water. Below 1.5 m it's shallow and dangerous. Roughly in the middle of the lineup there's a big rock underwater — with an overall depth of about one and a half body-heights it'll be waist-deep over the rock, so be careful with falls and wipeouts. On a small swell at high tide the conditions are great for beginners. There can be strong, unpredictable currents — they can suddenly sweep you toward Black Stone or Bali Soul. On a good forecast the inexperienced get swept off the lineup fast. You can paddle out across the isthmus between Mushroom Rock and Black Stone — but carefully, as it's dangerous between the rock and the wave on a big swell. You can't come back across the isthmus — it's slippery and dangerous because of the waves; only via the shore. Since the 2025–2026 season the crowd has grown noticeably — on a good forecast there can be a lot of people at Mushroom.
Hazards: shallow reef (from 1 m), leash snags on coral, reef injuries
Max swell: any (but picks up less swell than the neighbouring spots)
