Mengiat is an A-frame reef break in the Nusa Dua area, in front of the beach of the same name. The wave is sharp and steep, with a powerful punch on the sections. The spot is fickle: good conditions don't come around often, and the wave doesn't always live up to expectations.
The wave & conditions
The right is the main direction. The wave is sharp, similar in shape to Mushroom. On a small swell (up to 1.2 m) it barrels. On a good day it's powerful and long. On the A-frame you can also go left — the left breaks into a deep-water channel, which is handy for paddling back to the lineup. On the right side the current is stronger — it comes from Geger, which makes holding your position at the peak harder. The peak shifts around constantly, and positioning takes experience.
Conditions & tips
You paddle out through the channel on the left-hand wave side. On a small swell the inside suits beginners, but as the size grows the spot quickly becomes demanding. The strong current is the main hazard, especially with a big tide swing. The lineup is usually fairly empty — the spot is less popular than neighbouring Black Stone. The constant fight with the current makes surfing here physically tough, with a lot of paddling back to the peak. From Mengiat beach, boats run to Chicken Wings, where the wave is usually better. It sits between Chicken Wings and Black Stone; the order of the spots in Nusa Dua: Geger Left → Elevator → Geger Right → Chicken Wings → Mengiat → Black Stone → Mushroom Rock. The beach has board rental — 200k rupiah per session; rental here is traditionally pricier than at other spots. Parking is by the beach, with easy access to the water.
