Geger is the main swell magnet of the Bukit's southeastern coast. It always picks up more swell than the neighbouring spots. It holds almost any size and is never flat. The spot is a long way from shore, and many people get there by boat.

Peaks & waves

The right (Geger Right) is the main wave. Fast, powerful, and on a decent swell it barrels. The right is also known as Main. Nearby is a separate peak, Elevator — smaller in size but sharper. With certain winds the main peak shifts toward Chicken Wings. Chicken Wings is a separate section at the end of Geger Right, set apart by a 20-metre deep stretch. The swell is a touch smaller, the current gentler, and the wave runs up to 300 metres — a good option for intermediates. It works best at mid to high tide. On the outgoing tide the waves are bigger and sharper; on the incoming tide they're smaller and flatter. A strong current runs in the direction of the wave — paddling back to the lineup is hard work, and on big days you have to keep paddling to hold your position. An hour of surfing here is the equivalent of two anywhere else.
The left (Geger Left) is three separate peaks. Inside is the smallest and most accessible, closest to shore — slow lefts, suitable for intermediates on a medium swell. Middle is faster and more powerful, with a steep take-off and the longest waves at the spot. Outside sits before the drop-off into the Lombok Strait — a steep wave that can barrel straight off the take-off, for advanced surfers and up only. The left works best at low to mid tide. Geger Left handles wind poorly — quality drops off in a cross wind.

Conditions & tips

The current is Geger's main challenge. Its primary direction is north, toward the Lombok Strait. It strengthens on a big swell and on the incoming tide. On the inside the current drags you toward the channel at about 45°. The channel pulls you out into the open ocean. On a big swell, if you don't ride the wave all the way through, paddling back along the shore is impossible. The order of the spots in Nusa Dua: Geger Left → Elevator → Geger Right → Chicken Wings → MengiatBlack StoneMushroom Rock. It's a long paddle to the lineup. You can paddle out from the Geger temple side, from the Mulia hotel side, or take a boat — there are two beaches: Mengiat (orange flag) and Geger Beach Cafe (Indonesian flag). Boats run from 8 am, earlier by arrangement. Beginners have no business here. At low tide you can walk out across the reef — it's very shallow.
Hazards: strong currents, shallow reef, far from shore
