Kuta Reef is a classic left-hand reef break, about a kilometre off Kuta beach. You get to the spot by boat — the paddle is too far. It's the softest of the four reef breaks in the cluster (Kuta Reef, Second, Middles, Airport) and picks up less swell than Airport Left or Middles — so it's the one schools most often bring students to. It's one of Bali's first reef waves, ridden before surfers had even worked out the Bukit. In good conditions Kuta Reef delivers long rides, up to 200 metres, with barrelling sections.

The wave & conditions

Kuta Reef is a left that works on swells from 3 to 8+ ft. At mid to high tide the wave becomes predictable — a clean take-off and a long wall for turns. Barrelling sections show up on a good swell, but they're more the exception than the spot's calling card. At low tide an abrupt, powerful section switches on inside — the reef is shallow, and you can scrape your hands paddling. Cuts at this spot are a reality. On a swell from 8 ft and high tide Kuta Reef turns into one of the best waves for experienced surfers — powerful and long.

Conditions & tips

You can get there by boat from Jerman Beach (Pantai Jerman) — the cost depends on the number of people and the arrangement (transfer or waiting at anchor). The lineup can get very crowded — up to 50 people in the morning, up to 60–70 on the best forecast on a single peak. At sunset it's calmer — around 30. The localism here is noticeable: courtesy and respect for other surfers are a must. The bottom is sharp coral reef, very shallow at low tide. The best time is early morning before the wind picks up. The boats don't run on Hindu ceremony days — check ahead. The last run is around 18:00.
Hazards: shallow reef at low tide, far from shore, heavy crowds and localism
Max swell: limited — at high energy the reef can't hold it and the spot closes out
