Airport Left is a mellow left-hand reef break right next to the runway of Ngurah Rai Airport. You get there by boat from Pantai Jerman (in the Kuta area). The wave is long, not too fast and forgiving — one of the best reef spots for intermediate surfers. At mid tide the outer and inner peaks link up into very long lines with rides of 60–80 metres.

The wave & conditions

The left works on S–SW swells from 3 to 6 ft. The spot pulls in a touch more swell than Kuta Reef and is usually a foot bigger than Airport Right thanks to its more exposed position, which makes it a good call on small days. There are usually two take-off peaks, but the peak shifts around — the position keeps changing, and on a big swell the waves break in different places. The wave is softer and less abrupt than Kuta Reef — long walls for turns with the odd barrelling section at mid tide. At high tide the wave splits into two separate peaks — the rides are shorter, but the crowd spreads out. On a swell over 6 ft the wave starts to close out. Even at a working size, though, serious outside sets can come through and shut down the whole lineup.
The spot sits on the lee side of the runway embankment, which gives it extra shelter from the wind. Airport Left stays clean longer after the morning onshore has already blown out the other reefs.

Conditions & tips

Best tide is mid to high. At low tide the reef is shallow and sharp, and the current can swing toward the runway — that's dangerous. At high tide the current pulls into the channel between Airport Left and Middle Reef — it's manageable, but watch your position. In peak season there can be 40–60 people in the lineup. On a weak forecast or after heavy rain it can be almost empty. The boat from Pantai Jerman runs from 70,000 rupiah per person round trip.
Hazards: sharp coral reef (shallow even at mid tide), current into the channel at high tide
Max swell: 6 ft
