Airport Right is a right-hand reef break at the southern end of the Ngurah Rai Airport runway, on the Jimbaran side. You have to reach the spot by boat. Airport Right breaks further from shore, bigger, faster and shallower than neighbouring Toro Toro. On small days it's a long, easy right-hander. But on a good swell Airport Right turns into a fast, powerful barrel that's rated one of the best rights on Bali's west coast.
The wave & conditions
The wave works on SW–W swells from 4 ft — you need a swell big enough to wrap around the Bukit Peninsula. Up to about 1.5 m swell it's good walls with rides up to 200 metres. From 1.8 m the fast barrels start. On a small swell and high tide it's a long, rideable right — perfectly approachable for intermediate surfers. As the swell builds the character changes completely: the wave becomes fast and hollow, breaking top to bottom with a powerful take-off. The end section is especially tricky — a powerful barrelling section over shallow reef, where the lip throws into shallow water and the shoulder runs off into deep.
Minimum water is about 0.7 m on the tide, comfortable from 1.6 m and up. At mid tide the inside reef stays sharp and dangerous. At low tide it's not worth surfing — it'll drag you across the reef. Wind is N or NE (offshore). In the dry season the SE blows onshore here, so the best conditions are early morning before the wind picks up. The best months are April and October (the transitional ones); in July–August the southeast wind is at its strongest — sometimes blowing even at dawn.
Conditions & tips
You get there by boat from Pantai Jerman (in the Kuta area) — roughly 70–100,000 rupiah per person. The Right is further and more expensive than the Left. The lineup is usually not crowded, but the localism is noticeable — respect the pecking order and don't drop in. The bottom is lava rock with coral, very shallow at low tide. A wipeout in the shallows means cuts and broken boards. The spot demands a good knowledge of the ocean and proper preparation. Even on an average forecast serious outside sets come through — broken boards aren't rare here. Don't skimp on your leash.
Hazards: very shallow reef at low tide, a powerful wave on a big swell, far from shore
