Stylish wooden cafe near the harbor with amazing coffee and healthy food
The story of this cafe began when a British diver and wooden furniture maker fell in love with Gili Trawangan and decided to stay on the island.
In March 2013, on the main street of Gili Trawangan near the harbor, he opened Kaya Café, which translates from Indonesian as “Wooden Café” . At that time it was the only café with air-conditioned room. And even now, there are very few such places in Trawangan.
The first air-conditioned floor is the most active and popular. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an art coffee shop in a big city. Vintage artifacts - meat grinder, irons - are painted on the walls and racks. Right at the entrance guests are greeted by a shelf of organic cosmetics and quality tea. Cakes and pastries made here are sold in the window by the cash desk. Cayou Café's pastry shop and bakery lurks behind the building, where artisans work on muffins, bagels and cakes.
The art style is emphasized by unique napkin holders engraved with the Cayou Café logo. The staff is radiantly smiling. The quality of service and food is explained by the fact that the owner of the institution lives here on the island. He created this place for himself and for his friends. So that you can go there anytime to eat, invite your friends to a meeting and feel proud of your cafe.
The second floor is an open veranda from which you can admire the life of Trawangan's most active street.
Across the road from the main building of Cayu Café are tables set up right on the sand. There you can eat while gazing at the incoming boats, the neighboring island of Gili Meno and the magnificent line of mountainous Lombok with volcanoes and mountains draped in puffy clouds.
As the cafe is open from the earliest hours of the morning, it is a favorite with tourists who arrive on the island at the gentlest hours of the day or depart Trawangan in the morning. Kayu Cafe is said to be one of the best places on the island for breakfast or lunch.
The menu concept can be described as “healthy cuisine”. Both meat-eaters and vegans will enjoy it here. The menu was developed by the cafe's Finnish co-owner, embodying her knowledge of cooking gained in Helsinki and the traditional Finnish eco-friendliness.
A dish that could capture the spirit of this place in a concise and enjoyable way is the avocado toast, which is served in both a vegetarian version and a traditional version with chopped salmon. The taste of the freshest bread with a delicate crusty crust mingles with the flavor of creamy avocado, toasted greens, fresh cherry tomatoes and poached eggs.
Kaiu Cafe's signature dishes include falafel, smoothie bowls, airy pancakes and paninis. English breakfast is a special favorite among those who come early in the morning.
Cayu Cafe has the best natural juices on the island. They are made by slow pressing without the addition of any sweeteners. You are left alone with the flavorful essence of the fruit. Health food lovers will be won over by the green juices with kale and celery added.
Honey is added to the smoothie bowls for sweetness.
Cayu Cafe was the first establishment to bring a professional coffee machine to the island. And lovers of quality delicious coffee are still loyal to this place, which is not without reason considered iconic on Trawangan.
