A traditional Balinese restaurant with a great history and a huge selection on the menu.
Pros:
- the history of this place: 30 years ago a local Balinese woman Ibu Wayan opened a small warung for local farmers, since then the warung has evolved into a restaurant and has become a famous and even iconic place in Ubud; many stars have visited, including the not-so-famous writer Elizabeth Gilbert, who wrote the book “Eat, Pray, Love” and made Ubud famous
- impressive menu with local, Asian and European cuisine, vegetarian and children's menus; fresh baked goods from the in-house bakery. Breakfast from 8-11, there's a full American with drinks. Wide selection of soft and alcoholic drinks.
- Every Sunday at 6pm buffet with local cuisine, price for 195k, Balinese musicians play
- Quality products and no MSG (glutamate) or palm oil; the kitchen uses the principle of home cooking, everything is homemade, including sauces.
- huge territory and open space, it's like a museum, you can get lost)
- traditional design of natural materials surrounded by an orchard: there are separate gazebo with low tables and the usual European tables with chairs. Reservations are recommended for the evening, especially if you want to sit in a separate gazebo.
- no mosquitoes, mosquito repellent is used
- Own cooking school with a separate comfortable space and garden, workshops are held 2 times a day at 10 and 16, duration 2 hours, price 350k per person including lunch or dinner.
Cons:
- 15% tax
- On-street parking, not always available
- credit cards are accepted for checks of 100k or more.
What to try?
1. Nasi Goreng Manas - Specialty Nasi Goreng (fried rice) with saffron rice, pineapple, cashew nuts and raisins.
2. Chicken curry - Indonesian curry with chicken and apple, served with brown rice.
For vegetarians, vegetable curry with pumpkin and eggplant.
3- Indonesian rijstafel - assorted local dishes served in small portions for 2 people. Balinese dessert included. Recommended for those who want to try different local dishes in one set.
4. Grilled Bali Tuna - Grilled tuna fillet with young potatoes and vegetable salad.
5. Death by chocolate - the signature and most popular cake. I liked Rhubarb Cashew nut tart, a gluten-free tart with rhubarb and cashew.
