Fas.a.Fas Bakery & Cafe on Jalan Suweta in Ubud is a place where the scent of freshly baked goods fills the air each morning, and the interior transports visitors to the colonial era with an elegant touch. The founder, renowned Indonesian actor Nicholas Saputra, has turned his cafe into more than just a dining spot; it’s a space where history, art, and gastronomy come face to face. Appropriately, the cafe’s name, Face à Face, translates from French as “Face to Face.”
The cafe’s design is inspired by colonial architecture and the majestic Maimun Palace in Medan, complemented by Saputra’s unique touches. High ceilings, elegant columns, and intricate ornamentation create an atmosphere of sophistication and coziness. Dark wood, soft lighting, and architectural details reminiscent of the era give a sense of slower time.
The menu offers a wide selection of pastries and dishes that blend French and Indonesian culinary traditions. Special attention is given to classic French pastries like croissants, brioches, and baguettes. There is also a Medan quiche, merging French techniques with Indonesian spices.
The dishes and drinks are inspired by Saputra’s travels around the world — from Latin America to Africa and the far reaches of Indonesia. In addition to his acting career, Nicholas Saputra is known for his passion for culinary arts and design, which is reflected in the concept and execution of Fas.a.Fas Bakery & Cafe. His desire to create a place where people can gather and enjoy quality food in a welcoming setting is embodied in this project.
