Where to Travel for a Bali Visa Run: Part 1

If you stay in Bali long enough, there is a good chance that at some point you will need to leave Indonesia before starting a new period of stay. That short trip abroad is commonly known as a visa run.

Where you go largely comes down to three things: flight connections from Bali, the entry rules for your passport and how much time you need before returning to Indonesia. Some destinations work well for a quick overnight trip, while others are worth turning into a few days away.
For the first part of our guide, we look at four practical options from Bali: Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Thailand and Dili.

How much time should you allow?

There is no standard length for a visa run.
If you already know that you can re-enter Indonesia using a visa on arrival or another short-stay option, a couple of days abroad may be all you need.
Things are different when you are waiting for a new Indonesian visa to be approved before you return. In that case, leave some flexibility in your itinerary. Processing can take a week or more, and booking a flight back to Bali for the following day could leave you with a ticket you cannot use.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is one of the simplest places to reach from Bali. Direct flights are frequent, the journey takes roughly three hours, and tickets are often reasonably priced.
Malaysia also allows visa-free visits for many nationalities, including holders of many European passports. The exact conditions and permitted stay depend on your citizenship, so check the rules that apply to you before departure.
Travellers are also required to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before entering the country. The form is free and can be submitted within three days before arrival.
A same-day trip may be possible with the right flight schedule, but there is little reason to make it that rushed. One or two nights gives you much more flexibility and enough time to enjoy Kuala Lumpur between flights.
If you travel in and out of the country frequently, be prepared for additional questions at immigration. Keep your accommodation details, onward ticket and evidence of sufficient funds available.

Singapore

With a flight time of around two and a half hours, Singapore is another convenient option from Bali.
For many European passport holders, short visits do not require a visa. Other nationalities may need to arrange one before travelling, so passport-specific requirements should always be checked in advance.
Singapore is particularly suitable for travellers who would rather turn a visa run into a short city break. A night or two is enough for a change of scenery, although the overall cost of the trip is likely to be higher than in Kuala Lumpur or some other destinations in the region.
If your nationality requires a Singapore visa, Legal Indonesia can assist with single-entry, double-entry and multiple-entry applications.

Thailand

If you have a little more time, Thailand gives you considerably more options than a simple airport turnaround.
There are direct connections from Bali to both Bangkok and Phuket, making it possible to combine the practical side of a visa run with a few days in the city or by the beach. Flights take roughly four hours, depending on the destination.
Thailand grants visa-free entry to travellers from many countries, including much of Europe, but permitted stays and other conditions vary by nationality and can change. Check the latest rules for your passport before booking.
Travellers must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering the country. It is free and can be submitted within three days before arrival.
Given the travel time, two to four days usually makes more sense than trying to return immediately. You should also be ready to show an onward ticket, accommodation details or proof of funds if requested by immigration.

Dili, Timor-Leste

Dili is much closer to Bali than many people realise. A direct flight takes around two hours, making Timor-Leste an interesting alternative when you do not want to fly as far as Malaysia or Thailand.
Eligible travellers can obtain a 30-day visa on arrival for US$30. Entry conditions vary by nationality, however, so confirm that your passport qualifies before travelling.
Bring US dollars in cash for the visa fee rather than relying on finding an ATM or exchanging money after landing. It is also worth checking the latest arrival and customs formalities before departure and keeping proof of your return or onward journey with you.
Depending on the flight schedule, Dili can work for a very short visa run. Staying overnight, however, gives you a safer margin if connections are limited.

Before you book your flight back to Bali

Choosing where to go is the easy part. The more important question is whether you will have everything you need to enter Indonesia again.
If your next Indonesian visa has to be approved before arrival, wait until you have a realistic processing timeline before committing to a tight return schedule. A cheap flight is not much of a bargain if your visa is still being processed when it leaves.
Legal Indonesia assists with Indonesian visas on arrival, tourist visas and long-term visa applications. We can also help you work out how much time to allow outside Indonesia based on the type of visa you plan to use when you return.
In Part 2, we will look at four more destinations that can work well for a visa run from Bali: the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Hong Kong.
Information is current as of August 2026. Immigration and entry rules can change, and requirements depend on nationality. Check the latest conditions for your passport before travelling.
