The drugs were hidden in concealed compartments behind the back panels of their backpacks.
The couple arrived on a Jetstar flight from Melbourne, having travelled to Australia from Santiago with LATAM. Their luggage raised suspicion during X-ray screening in the international arrivals area, and customs officers and officials from Bali's anti-narcotics agency searched it by hand.
Each backpack contained two packets of white powder. Including packaging, 2284.5 grams were seized from the woman and 2310 from the man.
The suspects said they had come to Bali on holiday. The drivers the hotel had sent to pick up the guests were questioned. They were not involved in the smuggling and are listed in the case as witnesses.
Investigators then waited to see who would come for the shipment. An Indonesian national with the initials HU called the couple and asked them to hand over the cocaine in the courtyard of the hotel in Kuta where the Chileans were staying. He was arrested there.
HU said he was only supposed to collect the shipment and was acting on someone else's instructions. The organiser is still being sought. An international drug trafficking network may be behind the shipment.
The Chilean nationals are suspected of smuggling cocaine. Under Indonesian law, bringing more than five grams of this drug into the country is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Earlier, a Brazilian woman was also arrested at the airport. She was carrying 3.6 kg of liquid cocaine in shampoo bottles.
