Seraya Timur Makes History as Bali’s First ‘Merah Putih’ Village

Seraya Timur Village in the Karangasem district has officially been granted the status of the first 'Merah Putih Fishing Village' (Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih, KNMP) in Bali under the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries program. Its aim is to improve the welfare of fishermen and to develop a sustainable coastal economy.

The choice of Seraya Timur was not accidental: out of the 17,000 fishermen in Bali, more than five thousand work in Karangasem. 'The potential of fishing villages is immense, especially considering the number of fishermen,' noted Putu Sumardiana, head of the Bali Province Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office.
As part of the program, the village will receive funding of 22 billion rupiahs. These funds will be used for constructing piers, ice factories, cold storage facilities, culinary centers, and educational institutions. Additionally, water purification stations and fuel stations for boats will be established. The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.
Residents of Seraya Timur hope that participation in the program will bring significant social and economic changes: new jobs, expanded trading opportunities, and stable incomes for fishermen.
Special attention will be given to tourism development: plans include creating themed centers and supporting small businesses related to fishing. This will not only strengthen the village's economy but also attract tourists interested in the authentic lifestyle of Balinese fishermen. Seraya Timur promises to become a unique spot on Bali's map, where nature and local traditions harmoniously blend.
