Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara has officially designated Sanur as a low-emission zone to reduce exhaust fumes and noise. City officials say the rollout will be phased: first, changes to traffic patterns and priority for pedestrian routes, then the development of cycling infrastructure and closer integration with public transport.
The zone covers several parts of Sanur: the administrative areas of Sanur Kaja and Sanur Kauh, as well as the traditional communities of Sanur and Intaran.
The area is already focusing on electric transport: 12 electric shuttles are operating here, which should reduce the pressure from private cars. At the same time, city services are continuing work to upgrade pavements and street lighting — the aim is the same: to make walking easier and safer.
The World Resources Institute Indonesia was involved in the technical development of the project: the organisation advised city services and local bodies and helped set up a management model for the electric shuttles.
