About two months ago, this section had already collapsed and was partially restored. The road was already closed to four-wheeled vehicles, but the situation was complicated by the collapse occurring during repair work. Problems began after several days of heavy rain.
On the morning of August 28, the road completely fell underground. Even bikes now have difficulty passing, and one driver has already fallen into the newly formed hole about 12 meters deep. He suffered minor injuries.
Authorities have promised to carry out major repairs, and in the meantime, motorists will have to use detours through the village of Suter (north of Bangbang). This road is a key route for interregional traffic, especially in the eastern part of Bangli district, bordering Karangasem.
Such collapses are not uncommon for Bali. The soil conditions and frequent heavy rains erode the roads, particularly in the mountainous areas. Recently, the crucial road connecting the western port of Gilimanuk with Denpasar also partially collapsed. The only way to mitigate the risks is to improve drainage systems and carry out prompt repairs after emergencies.
