Safer Walks Ahead: Bali Launches Islandwide Sidewalk Repairs

The popular tourist areas — Uluwatu, Canggu, and Kuta — have long suffered from broken sidewalks. Walking here is reminiscent of an obstacle course: in Kuta, you literally have to weave your way through narrow paths, especially during peak hours. In comparison, walking in Sanur and Nusa Dua is much more peaceful.
The problem is not limited to the coastline. In Ubud, an urgent repair is underway on Raya Kedewatan Street, where part of the sidewalk has collapsed. The creators of the Ubud Story Walks project joke that "walking on Ubud's sidewalks is almost an Olympic discipline" and advise tourists to wear sturdy shoes.
The authorities have included a large-scale sidewalk renovation in the 2026 budget. The priorities are:
  • Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak — restoration of the most damaged sections;
  • Seminyak, Legian, and Kuta Beach (Samigita Beach) — improving pedestrian accessibility;
  • Jalan Raya Kuta — expanding the sidewalk between Hard Rock Cafe and the Pullman Hotel.
The head of Bali's Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD), Wayan Puspa Negara, reminded everyone: 'Broken sidewalks not only hinder tourists but also damage the island's image.' He mentioned that natural stone would be used during the repairs, and initial work will begin in the coming months.
In parallel, they are upgrading pedestrian zones and storm drainage on key streets:
  • Jl. Cokorda Gede Rai and Jl. Suweta — Ubud;
  • Jl. Yudistira and Batuan — Sukawati;
  • Jl. Pengelatan and Pejeng — Tampaksiring;
  • Jl. Diponegoro Semarapura — Klungkung (the work is already completed here).
When the projects are completed, walking on the island will become safer and more enjoyable.
