Ubud’s Next Upgrade: Goodbye Overhead Cables

A project to move telecommunications cables underground has started in Ubud. The work was officially launched on 20 April by the authorities of Gianyar Regency together with the association of telecommunications providers. The authorities call it the first step towards a neater and safer look for one of Bali’s main tourist areas.

In the first stage, the project is being carried out on three streets in Ubud: Jalan Suweta, Jalan Sri Wedari and Jalan Tirta Tawar. The providers themselves are funding the project. On Jalan Suweta, workers have already started digging by hand: five locations have been prepared to move the networks underground.
Work on Jalan Suweta has already begun. Workers opened up five points by hand on the western side of Puri Agung Ubud to prepare for moving the cables into an underground system. Traffic on the street was not completely closed.
The project should not cause any disruption to communications, as surveys and technical preparations were carried out before work began. During the construction phase, temporary inconvenience is possible on certain sections of the roads.
After the relocation, there should be fewer poles on the street, and the risk of accidents caused by sagging cables, large vehicles and falling trees will be lower. The authorities also hope the new setup will not interfere with ceremonies and processions, including cremation processions, the installation of penjors and ogoh-ogoh parades.
