The game combines the pace of tennis with elements of squash, while still being easy enough for beginners to pick up. Its popularity is not only down to the fast-moving nature of the game, but also to the social side, which helps create a friendly community. Bali now has plenty of modern padel courts in the main tourist areas, with new venues opening on a regular basis.
Padel has now also gained official recognition. The Badung authorities want to develop sports tourism through this sport. The reason was the Padel Island Tournament Series by Nak Badung, held at Tamora Padel Club in Canggu. Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa allocated 30 million rupiah for the competition. A total of 174 players took part in the tournament.
The Badung authorities see this not just as a trendy sport, but also expect events like this to attract a new audience of tourists to the island. Tournaments can appeal not only to players, but also to coaches, spectators, families, friends and partners. This means extra demand not only for the courts, but also for cafés, hotels, transport and other local businesses around the sports venues. There are also plans to make the Padel Island Tournament Series an annual international event.
Bali already has a large number of top-level instructors, including Indonesia’s best players and coaches from Europe, especially from Spain and Argentina. Clubs organise tournaments and friendly matches that you can join through apps or chats, as well as training sessions for beginners and for those who want to improve their level with professional instructors. There are also not only sports facilities, but comfortable lounge areas, cafés and even saunas.
