According to Heru Kustanto, head of the Center for Increasing the Use of Domestic Products, Apple submitted documents on September 11 to obtain the TKDN certificate (local component level), which was approved on the same day. The next steps involve obtaining distribution permission from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Technology and an import permit from the Ministry of Trade. These procedures will take at least three weeks, after which the new smartphones can be expected in Indonesia.
The global premiere of the iPhone 17 took place on September 9 at Apple Park, Cupertino. The lineup includes four models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 Air has generated the most interest — it's the thinnest Apple smartphone ever (5.6 mm), made of titanium. This model replaces the Plus version and marks a new stage in the company's design.
Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang confirmed that Apple's investments in Indonesia are continuing. Recently, the Apple Developer Academy BINUS opened in Bali, and upcoming launches include Apple Software Indonesia and Technology Institute and Apple Professional Developer Academy.
Additionally, an Apple factory is being built in Batam, which will produce up to 65% of all AirTags worldwide. The investment is estimated at USD 1 billion (approximately Rp16 trillion) with the potential to increase to USD 10 billion. The facility will create around 2,000 jobs and is set to begin operations in early 2026.
