Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced that Apple has not yet requested permission to sell the new generation of iPhones in Indonesia.

At the same time, he mentioned that Apple’s investment commitments in the country are being implemented according to agreements. One confirmation of this is the launch of Apple BINUS Bali Developer Academy on August 28. Opening of the Apple Software Indonesia and Technology Institute and the Apple Professional Developer Academy is expected in the future.
The American corporation previously committed to increasing its investments in the country. Specifically, an Apple supplier factory is being constructed in Batam, which is planned to provide up to 65% of the world’s AirTag supply. The investment volume is estimated at $1 billion, with the prospect of creating around 2,000 jobs.
In the future, Apple’s total investment in Indonesia could reach $10 billion. The launch of the factory is scheduled for the beginning of 2026.
The minister also emphasized that hundreds of suppliers are involved in the production of a single Apple smartphone, dozens of whom are already operating in Southeast Asian countries — Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Indonesia aims to expand its participation in this chain. The country has a requirement for manufacturers: to officially sell smartphones, local production capabilities for components must be established.
Apple's entry into the Indonesian market offers opportunities for both technological growth and attracting new investors from the US — both affiliated with Apple and independent.
The launch of iPhone 17 sales in Indonesia should not be expected soon — the model's presentation is anticipated soon, but the debut in local stores isn't imminent. Those wishing to buy the smartphone will have to go to Singapore or Malaysia, or find ways through grey imports. However, it is important to remember that bringing the device requires registration and tax payment, otherwise, the smartphone will remain without cellular service.
