Tourist Without Helmet Faces Possible Deportation

A video featuring a foreigner has gone viral again on Indonesian social media. This time, the focus is on an Italian citizen who seems to have found the easiest way to get deported from Bali. The cause of all his problems is as old as Mount Agung itself: riding a scooter without a helmet.

When he ran into the traffic police, the hot-headed Italian managed to tick every box for trouble at once.
It happened at the Jalan Gunung Agung intersection in Denpasar. The foreigner, with the initials GI, was riding a scooter without a helmet and had a passenger with him—an Indonesian citizen.
A police officer stopped the pair to check their documents, intending to record traffic violations. But instead of the usual attempts to come to an arrangement and minimise the fine, the tourist started arguing aggressively and voiced his dissatisfaction with the officer’s actions.

A 15-second clip shows the tourist trying to prove something to the officer and even roughly pushing him. In the comments, users are asking where the Italian would be now if he had done that, for example, in the US.
“In another country the officer wouldn’t have stayed so calm and would have just shot—why do foreigners think they can behave like this in Bali?” outraged locals write.
So far, the roadside incident has not ended in anything serious for the Italian citizen, but there may be more to come. His scooter was seized as evidence, and he was detained for further investigation.
Police also said they are working with immigration to check whether the tourist committed any other offences. Given the public backlash around the video, deportation may still be applied.

Incidents like this regularly spark public outrage in Bali, where foreigners’ behaviour has recently been under close scrutiny from both the authorities and local residents.
