The familiar Bali arrangement — “you create content, I’ll give you a free villa” — is now being treated as a potential violation of Indonesia’s visa regulations.
The Directorate General of Immigration (Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi) has issued new guidance that has raised concerns among influencers and content creators across the island. Even standard collaborations with villas, hotels, cafés, or brands may now be considered visa violations and could result in deportation, even when no payment is involved.

Officers are now reviewing any projects, social media advertising and collaborations, even those that are entirely unpaid. The authorities have reiterated that tourist and socio-cultural visas are not suitable for activities that may be interpreted as work or commercial promotion. Immigration will assess each foreigner’s purpose of travel, their actual activities and any hidden commercial benefit.
Bloggers, content creators, photographers, DJs, wellness specialists and yoga instructors are considered particularly at risk. The agency has highlighted high-risk areas, including make-up services, filming, brand ambassador work and the creation of any business-related content. Article 122(a) of Indonesia’s Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011 requires foreign nationals to use a visa only for its intended purpose.
Anyone who breaks the rules faces hefty fines and deportation. To run retreats safely, produce content or work on a barter basis, you will need to arrange different types of permits. Immigration recommends applying in advance for business visas, work permits, volunteer and investment visas, or special artist visas.
Officials illustrated the new rules with a real example. They described a foreign make-up artist who did a model’s make-up for free to create an attractive video. Even without direct payment, the authorities deemed it a violation, since the creator gained promotional value and portfolio material.
