A fire broke out on a vacant lot in the Jatayu area of Legian, near Sunset Road. The blaze was spotted at around 23:00 local time on Monday, 31 August; the flames were clearly visible from Nakula Street (Jalan Nakula) and caused panic among local residents.
The lot sits on the border between Legian and Denpasar. A fire crew was sent to the scene right away, but as of publication the cause of the fire and the size of the affected area had not been established, and there is no information about anyone being hurt.
A fire had already broken out on this same lot on 27 August 2025 — piles of construction waste burned across about 10 ares, and the flames were put out in an hour and a half.
Fires in Bali are most common at the peak of the dry season: according to the meteorological service, in 2026 it has been longer and drier than usual because of a weak El Niño. From mid-April to mid-August, Bali's emergency response agency counted around 160 hectares of the island affected by wildfires, most of it in Buleleng and on Nusa Penida.
The same drought caused Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in Java to burn for nearly two weeks in August — more than a thousand hectares were destroyed, tourist access was closed completely, and the park reopened only on 20 August.
