The construction of the large JW Marriott Hotel complex with a restaurant and spa in the Puhu area has been temporarily stopped. The decision to freeze the work was made following a sudden inspection by the Special Committee on Spatial Planning, Assets, Permits, and the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP).
The main violation discovered by the inspectors was the builders blocking an irrigation canal. Restricting irrigation systems is a serious violation in Bali, where the subak system (a traditional irrigation system) is culturally and vitally important for rice fields.
The Chairman of the Special Committee on Spatial Planning, I Made Suparta, announced the temporary suspension of all construction work.
"We are calling the responsible party for a discussion. The suspension is related to an incomplete set of permits, as well as several violations found, including the blocking of the irrigation channel," explained Suparta.
It was found that the property under construction, located on a sloped site covering 3 hectares, has a building permit (IMB), but it is still issued in the name of the previous owner - Sheraton Hotel. Additionally, the developer lacks several necessary permits.
A hotel public relations representative stated that their activities allegedly fall into the 'low-risk' category, but the situation on site suggests otherwise.
"We require all permits to be provided. They must be ready to present them by at least the time of our next meeting," added Suparta.
The JW Marriott public relations representative, I Gusti Bagus Prayuta, confirmed that he would immediately notify management of this decision.
"We will comply with whatever the authorities decide," he assured.
The Chief of Satpol PP Bali, Dewa Nyoman Rai Dharmadi, confirmed that in accordance with the decision of the regulatory authorities, the hotel owner will be summoned for a thorough investigation and review of their existing permits.
Construction will be halted until JW Marriott resolves all violations and provides the complete set of required permits.
