Bali Airport Welcomes 2M+ Passengers in Jan 2025, Enhances AI & Automation

In January 2025, Bali’s main airport welcomed and bid farewell to over two million passengers, marking a 12% increase compared to last year. On average, the airport processes around 64,000 travelers per day, but the real peak came on January 3, when passenger numbers hit 79,342. This surge was caused by the “reverse flow” effect as tourists returned home or embarked on new journeys after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Top International and Domestic Routes
Among international destinations, the busiest routes were:
1. Singapore – 205,238 passengers
2. Kuala Lumpur – 138,718 passengers
3. Melbourne – 101,843 passengers
For domestic flights, the top choices were:
1. Jakarta – 387,508 passengers
2. Surabaya – 116,429 passengers
3. Makassar – 45,256 passengers
As usual, the largest number of visitors came from:
1. Australia – 139,577 passengers
2. China – 61,984 passengers
3. India – 36,514 passengers
Travel to and from Bali is expected to become even more accessible with new international routes now connecting Denpasar to:
• Moscow (Russia)
• Bangalore (India)
• Canberra (Australia)
• Abu Dhabi (UAE)
• Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia)
• Phuket (Thailand)
• Busan (South Korea)
• Shanghai (China)
Additionally, new domestic routes are in the pipeline, linking Bali to Sorong (Papua), Lampung (South Sumatra), Berau (East Kalimantan), Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, Palembang (South Sumatra), and Pontianak (West Kalimantan). These additions will allow travelers to explore some of Indonesia’s most remote and stunning regions.
Thanks to improved slot management, Bali Airport has significantly increased its capacity and now operates 65 flight routes—25 domestic and 40 international. The airport also serves as a hub for 54 airlines (12 domestic, 42 international).
Bali Airport has also followed in the footsteps of Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta by modernizing its security screening process. The installation of the Automated Tray Return System (ATRS) in all terminals streamlines security checks and complements 90 new auto-gates introduced at international arrival and departure terminals in 2024. This automation now enables the airport to process up to 500 passengers per hour.
One of the key benefits of ATRS is that passengers no longer need to remove items such as bags, laptops, or bottled water during security screening. Additionally, checkpoint areas will be expanded to accommodate more passengers without disrupting efficiency.
• Travelers requiring additional checks will be directed to a separate lane, while others can move through quickly.
• The airport is also integrating AI-powered monitoring systems to track passenger flow and enhance efficiency.
2025: A Record-Breaking Year Ahead?
January’s data clearly shows that these technological upgrades have already improved operations despite record-high passenger volumes. Given the continued growth and new improvements, 2025 is on track to become another record-breaking year for Bali Airport. ✈️🏝
