The international review site AirlineRatings, known for its objective evaluations of carriers, has published the list of the world’s safest airlines for 2025. The ranking, based on the analysis of 385 airlines, is divided into two categories: full-service airlines and budget carriers.
This ranking is great news for travelers planning trips to Bali, as many of the highlighted airlines serve this destination.
Air New Zealand topped the list of the safest full-service airlines for 2025. The airline is renowned for its innovative approach, including its famous Skycouch seats, which can be converted into beds for a comfortable sleep.
Qantas, ranked second, is the world’s oldest operating airline (founded in 1920) and maintains a solid reputation as a reliable carrier.
Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, and Emirates shared third place, all known for their luxurious service and top-notch standards.
Why is Air New Zealand ranked first?
Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings, explained: “The difference between Air New Zealand and Qantas was just 1.5 points. Air New Zealand’s advantage lies in its younger fleet, reducing the likelihood of technical issues.”
Air New Zealand operates flights from Auckland to Denpasar three times a week.
Other airlines in the top 10:
• Virgin Australia and Etihad Airways (4th and 5th places).
• ANA, EVA Air, and Korean Air were also included.
• Alaska Airlines and Turkish Airlines rounded out the top 10.
Budget Airlines Serving Bali Also Scored High
• The Jetstar Group ranked second, just behind Hong Kong Express.
• AirAsia, one of the largest budget airlines, placed sixth. Starting March 22, 2025, AirAsia will launch a new route between Darwin and Bali, making the island even more accessible for Australians.
• VietJet, ranked eighth, is actively expanding its routes, connecting Bali and Jakarta with Ho Chi Minh City and over 160 international destinations.
While Indonesia’s Garuda Indonesia did not make the top 25, it holds a seven-star safety rating, reflecting its high standards. The airline is actively improving its service and modernizing its fleet, earning passenger trust.
AirlineRatings evaluates airlines based on multiple factors, including:
• Major incidents over the past two years.
• Fleet age and size.
• Frequency of incidents and fatalities.
• Financial stability.
• IOSA certification and ICAO audit compliance.
• Pilot qualifications and training.
For example, an airline with 100 aircraft and three incidents raises more concern than one with 800 aircraft and six incidents. Financial instability or failure to meet IOSA standards automatically excludes an airline from the ranking.
From 2018 to 2022, the risk of fatality in air travel was 1 in 13.7 million flights, compared to over 1.19 million annual road traffic deaths (WHO data). This confirms that aviation remains one of the safest modes of transport.
