Kedungu is a soft beach break 15–20 minutes' drive from Canggu, in Tabanan. It's very much like Batu Bolong, but less crowded (though it's filling up). Three peaks: the south one by the headland (the Headland Peak) is the most advanced, a left along the rocks; the central one is a soft zone for surf schools; the western one catches the most swell and draws the bulk of the surfers. A fun spot for mid-lengths (6.8–7.0) and longboards — the wave is gentle and lacks power, too weak for a shortboard. For total beginners it's debatable — without surf etiquette you can take one to the head, but on the tide there's a decent whitewater. The area is developing fast — villas and restaurants among the rice fields, a laid-back atmosphere.
The wave & conditions
The central peak is an A-frame, breaking both left and right, very softly. Often too soft even to generate speed — the rides are flat. The south peak by the headland is a left, a bit steeper, but there are rocks on the inside — take care. The western peak has rights, slightly bigger in size. The spot holds a good size — the outside sets can be considerably bigger than the daily forecast. At the same time the forecast reflects reality on the spot fairly truthfully. It doesn't work at dead low; better at mid tide, when the wave is better shaped. Swell: S, SW. Like all the spots on the west coast, it's prone to unexpected cleanup sets on a big swell.
Conditions & tips
You get in from the beach through the channels between the peaks. At mid–high tide there's a shorebreak, but softer than at Batu Bolong. The wave is weak as it is — a strong offshore only gets in the way, adding resistance. Best on a windless morning — early on it can be empty and you can almost have it to yourself. The shoulder seasons (March–May, November–December) are ideal: light wind and a suitable size. On the south peak there are submerged rocks — take care when paddling and on wipeouts. The water is cleaner than in Canggu — there's no sewage draining into the ocean. Board rental is around 50k IDR; rentals open from 6 a.m. (Kedungu Surf Shack is the rental point right on the spot). There's a surf school on the spot, Shark Surf School (with Sila, a Balinese instructor). Parking is by the wave and the roads are still quiet — a pleasant alternative to the Canggu traffic.
