Batu Bolong is Canggu's main surf spot, sitting right by the Pura Batu Bolong temple it's named after. A reef break with sandy patches. The wave breaks over a shallow reef and forms an A-frame — lefts and rights peeling off both sides of the peak. Rides can run over 100 metres. It's the centre of Bali's longboard culture and the busiest place to surf in Canggu — the vast majority of surf schools operate here.

The wave & conditions

The wave is thick, slow and forgiving — even at overhead it stays soft. The main lineup is in front of the rock, where the left is the main peak. A second lineup sits further left and further out. The rights work too — locals favour them: the ride is longer and runs all the way to the beach without losing power. On a tide of 1.5 m and up, a separate inside left appears by the big rock — clean rides for noseriding. The optimal swell is 4–6 ft. Above 7 ft the spot can't hold it — the wave starts closing out. It only works on a forecast — on a small swell it's flat here. The more southerly the swell direction, the better. It's very wind-sensitive — the wind picks up after 10 a.m., so the best window is from dawn to 10:00.

Hazards & tips

The crowd is the main problem. On weekends there can be up to 90 people in the lineup. Experienced surfers living in Canggu often skip Batu Bolong to avoid taking a board from a beginner. Flying longboards are a real danger. There's a strong shorebreak on the beach — getting in and out through the whitewater can be unpleasant, especially on a big swell. On the left (south) side of the beach the sand quickly turns to sharp reef and rocks — at low water you can cut your feet badly. A river enters nearby: after rain the water is dirty and there can be rubbish. Surfers regularly pick up infections — experienced surfers recommend ear and nose plugs. The main peak at Batu Bolong isn't for total beginners; for first lessons the neighbouring Old Man's is a better fit.
There are plenty of rentals on the beach — a longboard from 50,000 IDR per session. Lots of surf schools and instructors, but the quality varies: cheap local instructors give minimal feedback, and there have been cases of students colliding with other surfers. Nearby are La Brisa, Seaweed and Beach Bums restaurants. There's bike parking, but space is limited.
Hazards: crowds, flying longboards, sharp reef at low tide, dirty water after rain
