Honeymoon (a.k.a. Jump Off) is a left-hand point break on the western edge of Jimbaran Bay. One of the few true point breaks in Bali. People come here when a big swell of 10 ft and up arrives and Balangan, Impossibles and Uluwatu are too big and too scary — inside the bay the wave will be half the size. But the spot also works on a medium swell — the wave will be smaller, but so will the crowd.
The wave & conditions
A long left-hander that runs right up against the cliff. Three take-off zones: the outside (30 m further from the cliff, advanced only — the wave jacks up fast and breaks hard), the main peak by the cliff, and the inside peak (20 m closer to shore, where the wave is softer and slower, for intermediates). The start can be very steep with a drop — the wave hits the cliff, and the whitewater can push you off on take-off. On a good swell the ride is long, with sections for cutbacks. It can hold you down a fair bit.
Conditions & tips
The safe way in is to climb down to the beach nearby. But you can jump off the cliff straight onto the peak — that's the fastest way into the water. At low tide jumping is dangerous — there's not enough water, and there have been serious injuries. The current pushes you off on entry. Schools don't come here, but there can be a lot of locals — you have to know how to get along with them. On a big swell the spot is packed — everyone who found the Bukit too powerful heads here. The place is secluded, so don't leave valuables in your car.
Even if you're not surfing, Honeymoon is worth a visit as a viewpoint. The lineup is right below the cliff — on a powerful swell you can see the waves and the surfers laid out in front of you, an impressive sight.
Hazards: steep start by the cliff, cliff jump on entry, sharp reef, current, lots of locals
