Balangan is a reef break on the Bukit Peninsula with a fairly fast left. The reef runs from the cliff along the whole beach and splits into three sections that, on a good swell and the right tide, line up into one long ride. The spot is sensitive to swell direction — it needs the most southerly angle. It holds almost any size: on a big swell you can ride the full length of the spot. It's a temperamental wave: more often it closes out along its whole length than it gives you a wall. Good days do happen, but you have to catch them — it comes down to the exact swell direction and tide.
The wave & conditions
The peak by the cliff has a cleaner shape. The wave often closes out fast, so you have to pick your take-off carefully. It holds any swell size. On a big swell it works great at all tides — from super low to high. On a small swell at low tide it's already dangerous, and getting in without reef booties is tricky. On full water with a medium swell, rights appear on the inside. It pumps a little less than at Uluwatu. At high tide on a small swell the inside suits improving beginners. To paddle out at overhead and up, there's a deep-water channel about 50 metres from the cliff where the waves don't break.
Conditions & tips
The standard in the water is mid to low — lots of surf schools and rentals. Few locals. On a small to medium forecast the spot is packed — up to 100+ people in the lineup. Surf etiquette is barely observed: drop-ins, surfers paddling in circles, surf-school students in the way. From about 1.5x overhead and up, half the crowd clears out and it gets much better. Watch the end section at low tide: it shuts down hard on the reef and can block your way out. On big days the current itself pushes you toward that zone, and over the nearly dry reef a heavy shorebreak hits. The reef is sharp and live. Parking is convenient, and there are warungs on the beach.
Hold-downs. Balangan is a deep-water wave, so even a touch above head height it can hold you under noticeably. On big swells this is the main concern alongside the end section — bring a thick leash.
Balangan is a relaxed bay with a long white beach. Wooden warungs line the shore where you can watch the surf and leave your things (if you order something), and there's cheap accommodation too. At low tide, rock pools open up along the shore.
