Uluwatu Temple Gets New Coastal Wall Upgrade

In May last year, the Bali authorities became concerned that the Uluwatu cliff, on which the famous temple is located, began to deteriorate due to erosion and powerful ocean waves. A rescue project was developed.

The work included four main elements: the road to the beach, the installation of a seawall, reinforcement of the cliff under Pura Luhur Uluwatu, and the renovation of the temple.
The head of the Water Resources Department of the Badung Public Works and Planning Office, Anak Agung Rama Putra, reports that all items undertaken by the contractor under the design and build system are fully completed. The next phase includes additional work: the construction of a seawall to Batu Metandal, addressing cracks on the left slope of the cliff, and planting trees suitable for the natural habitat of the monkeys living near Pura Luhur Uluwatu.
The work is planned to be financed through the revised 2025 budget and possibly the main 2026 budget. Rama Putra emphasized that implementation will depend on available funds, as the project is extensive and requires time and precise calculations.
"It's a major construction, and we are calculating everything considering the uncertainties to understand what can be realized and how," he explained.
Meanwhile, the official opening ceremony is not yet planned. "We want everything to be completely finished," added Rama Putra.
The initial project included the construction of barriers to Batu Metandal, but due to the limited budget, the seawall was built only to the cape under the sacred place (sesuhunan) most exposed to wave impact. Now that the most critical protective elements are completed, there is an opportunity to proceed with the project at a more measured pace.
The temple, despite the work, is open to visitors. So if you wish to enjoy the stunning views and get a spiritual experience at the same time, wear appropriate attire for the sacred site and set out for your journey.
