We have previously reported that one of the most famous temples in Bali, Luhur Uluwatu, is under serious threat of collapsing into the ocean along with the cliff it is built on. After another earthquake, a crack of impressive size appeared in the rock formation, causing concern among authorities and temporarily restricting access to some parts of the temple.
Back in September 2023, plans were outlined to strengthen the weakened rock. And now, finally, there is good news as the work will begin in May. The repair costs are estimated to be around 82 billion rupiahs.
They decided to start by building special breakwaters designed to prevent further impact of powerful ocean waves on the cape.
The head of the Department of Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) of the Badung Regency, Rama Putra, guaranteed that the conditions around the temple will remain safe for visitors during construction. The department head also emphasized that the results of crack analysis in the rock, conducted since 2019, show that there has been no significant shifting or widening. "The cracks exist, but their condition is stable and not worsening," he noted. "Nevertheless, we must remain cautious and continue to pray to prevent landslides
