Rescuing Pura Luhur Uluwatu: Temple on the Brink of Ocean Collapse!

A major crack that formed in one of Bali's most sacred sites—the cliff of Pura Luhur Uluwatu— is set to be repaired by the end of this year. For a long time, the public was alarmed by the crack, as it seemed the 70-meter cliff could collapse into the ocean at any moment. However, experts have reassured that the situation is not as dire as it appears.

The threat of the Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple collapsing first arose in 1992 when a significant crack was discovered in the cliff after a major earthquake. Despite public concern, the Balinese government took no action to reinforce the cliff for 32 years, with the only measure being a limitation on visitor numbers.
Nevertheless, the crack was monitored regularly, with drone footage and expert consultations helping to keep track of any changes. This careful observation allowed them to detect the crack's growth in September 2023 quickly. Although repairs couldn’t begin immediately, after a year of assessments and economic calculations, efforts to save the cliff are now underway. The first step involved a ceremonial prayer known as "Mulang Pakelem," aimed at ensuring safety and seeking divine support for the repair work.
"During the ceremony, we prayed for safety and expressed hope that the issue of repairing the Uluwatu temple's walls can be resolved quickly if we work together," said I Wayan Adi Arnawa, Regional Secretary of Badung Regency.
The next steps, according to him, will be carried out by a team from Badung's Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (PUPR). The official project title is: "Construction of Dams, River and Beach Protection, and Disaster Mitigation Measures." The plan involves fixing the cracks, repairing and reinforcing the foundation, which may require the construction of 6-meter support pillars at the cliff's base.
"Given the complexity of these operations, an access route to the 70-meter-high cliff will be necessary," said Water Resources Department Head, A.A. Rama Putra.
Only after this will they be able to start reinforcing the cliff and further protecting it from wave impact. Rama Putra emphasized that regular analysis and correct decision-making are essential when addressing cracks in cliffs.
The first phase of the crack repair work is scheduled for completion by December 2024. The Badung Regency government has allocated a budget of 78.6 billion rupiahs for this project.
Currently, this project is considered a top priority by local authorities, given the importance of Pura Luhur Uluwatu as a cultural and religious landmark, which is held in high regard. Once the work is completed, the temple will be safe and comfortable for both local worshippers and visiting tourists.
