A 47-year-old Portuguese citizen who was about to leave Indonesia was detained at Ngurah Rai Airport. Ammunition was found during a security check before her flight to Abu Dhabi. In one of the pockets, they found a box containing 50 rounds of .22 Long Rifle ammunition, wrapped in a white napkin. The woman admitted that the ammunition belonged to her.
According to her, she is a member of a sport shooting federation in Portugal and usually uses the backpack for training. She claims she did not notice the remaining ammunition in it before travelling.
Ngurah Rai Airport Police said the tourist did not have any Indonesian documents or permits for possessing or transporting ammunition. She was taken to the airport police station.
Investigators are now checking CCTV footage, questioning witnesses, processing the seizure of the items and coordinating with the Portuguese consulate.
The case is being handled under Article 306 of the Indonesian Criminal Code, which covers the illegal possession, transport or export of weapons and ammunition. The maximum penalty under this article is up to 15 years in prison.
